A Day in the Life of a Recruiter (2023 Edition)

Over the years, the average day for a recruiter has evolved significantly to meet the ever-changing needs of the consumer. While adjectives like ‘fast-paced’ and ‘impactful’ are just as on-point now as they were ten years ago when describing a recruiter job description, the day-to-day responsibilities and culture have adapted with the times.

Working as a recruiter in 2023 is an incredible way to make a difference in the lives of others while growing as a professional and pushing yourself to new heights. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already thinking about applying for a job as a recruiter.

While it’ true that no two days are the same for any recruiter, we’re here to give you a better idea of what to expect if you choose this career path (aside from great money). So, what does a day in the life of a recruiter really look like? Keep reading to find out.

Life as a Recruiter: A Typical Day

On any given day, there are a million things you could be doing when you work as a recruiter. If you’re someone who gets easily bored by the same old routine, the recruiter life is for you. Now, we’re sharing some insight into what a typical day looks like for us.

Getting Organized for the Day Ahead

Life as a recruiter is unpredictable by nature, so the typical workday starts with getting organized in the way that best sets you up for success throughout the day. This could mean scheduling interviews, making phone calls, sending emails, catching up with coworkers, having one-on-one chats with managers, or updating the information in your applicant tracking system (ATS).

Organizational savvy is not only an essential soft skill for recruiters, but it’s a vital part of staying on top of your daily responsibilities and maximizing your profits. At RHM, we provide all of our recruiters with the resources and tools they need to help them develop the kind of organizational skills that will enable them to thrive in their roles.

Collaborating with the Team

Collaboration is huge in many industries, but in the recruiting world – it’s an absolute necessity. We have more talent today than ever before, which means that companies everywhere are struggling to fill open positions. This tight labor market has paved the way for a level of collaboration that is typically uncommon in other sales environments where competition among colleagues is expected.

You can expect to spend some amount of time each day collaborating with the other recruiters on your team, networking, sharing leads, and working with your colleagues to overcome the hurdles that come with hiring in today’s landscape. At the end of the day, recruiting will always be a sales-based job, but don’t let that mislead you into thinking it’s not also a hugely collaborative one. Our young and energetic team at RHM thrives off bouncing ideas off one another and can often be found solving problems as a unit.

Communicating with Candidates

When you work as a recruiter, you can expect a good chunk of your day to revolve around communicating with candidates. What exactly does that mean? Well, that totally depends on you! This time could be spent hunting through LinkedIn for candidates that match a particular job order, chatting with current candidates, or reconnecting with past candidates to see how things are going in their new roles.

Much of the candidate communication process takes place online or on the phone, but we also take the time to meet our candidates face-to-face to get to know them on a more meaningful level. Spoiler alert: this is our favorite part of the day! Chatting face-to-face allows us to identify a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses while getting a better feel for their personality. This helps us determine which job opportunity will serve as the best match for both the candidate and the hiring company. Our primary goal is to help people get the jobs they want and need, so communication is key.

Networking to Maintain Relationships

One of the beautiful things about life as a recruiter is forming relationships that stand the test of time. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to reach out to past candidates after placing them at a new company. Our top priority is to change lives for the better by matching candidates with roles they can find joy and succeed in, so we love to check in.

It’s wildly rewarding to catch up with someone whose life and career path have been changed by you, and it could potentially serve as an opportunity to line up more business down the road. Sure, recruiting has its ups and downs like any other job, but you’ll find that most of us are thoroughly fulfilled by what we do. If you have ambition, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude – you can succeed as a recruiter.
