Interviewing After Being Fired for Engineers

Industrial jobs in Milwaukee

Interviews can be stressful enough without something looming over you that you can’t do anything about, like being fired from a previous engineering job. Of course this isn’t ideal, but the key is to persevere and come back better than ever. After all, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, and we think he came back just fine. What can you do to overcome your past and press on?

Be Honest

It’s important to be honest with yourself and employers. Dishonestly is a much larger red flag than the fact that you were fired. It’s also important to be honest with yourself as to why you were fired. Admit your mistakes. This is the first step in making yourself a better employee.

Confidence is Key

Being confident in your abilities is a must when interviewing. This is especially true after being fired from a similar position. If a hiring manager can sense even the slightest bit of doubt, then they won’t hesitate to go with a different candidate. This isn’t meant to put added pressure on an already stressful situation, but to encourage you to better yourself to convince anybody that you are without a doubt NOT that same employee that was fired.

Grow From it

Engineers get fired. It’s business. It may not always be your fault, but if it is, own it and grow from it. The worst thing you could do is to keep trying to do the same thing over and over and expect different results. Take the feedback or your reason for being fired and find a way to turn it into a positive. Take this time between jobs, that you otherwise would not have had, and utilize it to improve upon your weakness(es). This not only shows initiative but the desire to grow and do better. Showing this can be just as encouraging if not more encouraging than a so-so work history. Learning from your mistakes proves that you want the job and now, because of your hard work, you can do the job well.

It’s certainly not ideal, but when tough times come around, it’s best to dust yourself off and make the best of the situation.
